# Nothing in the connection log

Why isn’t my device log showing? The other blocks are working so I know my device is connected but nothing shows on my log. Am i using it wrong[.](http://www.historicalfirstimpressions.com/UserProfile/tabid/43/userId/1683206/Default.aspx)

The screenshot you provided indicates that the selected device has never connected to our [MQTT broker](https://docs.losant.com/mqtt/overview/#the-losant-message-broker). It’s certainly possible for the rest of your dashboard blocks (also backed by this device) to be displaying data, as device state can be set in a workflow using the [Device State Node](https://docs.losant.com/workflows/outputs/device-state/), or by using our [REST API](https://docs.losant.com/rest-api/device/#send-state). Neither of those would mark the device as “connected” as neither method establishes a connection between the device and the broker.

In fact, our [weather walkthrough](https://docs.losant.com/getting-started/walkthrough/) works in this way. No physical device ever connects to the broker, as all device state is set in a workflow.
